Status: Hourly - Salary Range: $17 to $20 per hour
Reports to: Team Lead

Position Mission
To effectively and efficiently teach students to become water-safe in order to prevent drowning by using the Big Kahuna Swim Academy Method.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver engaging and effective swim lessons (private 1:1 and group) by employing diverse teaching methods to cater to students of all ages and varying skill levels, emphasizing water safety and foundational swimming skills.
  • Cultivate a positive learning environment by providing exceptional customer service, demonstrating empathy, enthusiasm, compassion, and pride, and paying close attention to detail.
  • Document student progress by meticulously recording detailed notes on lessons, skill development, and participation levels in a timely manner.
  • Ensure a safe and secure aquatic environment by actively supervising all students, enforcing water safety rules, and maintaining constant vigilance.
  • Personalize instruction by adapting teaching techniques to meet the unique needs of each student, providing targeted support for those requiring additional assistance.
  • Facilitate effective learning in Assisted Group Swim Lessons by collaborating with parents to maintain a 1:1 student-to-instructor ratio, ensuring enhanced safety and individual attention.
  • Prepare and organize the learning space by setting up and cleaning up class equipment before and after each shift, maintaining a tidy and efficient environment.
  • Maintain open and consistent communication by debriefing with the direct supervisor, proactively reporting concerns or needs, and utilizing the "see something, say something" approach.
  • Commit to a consistent work schedule by adhering to one's own schedule and attendance, ensuring customer retention, and committing to a schedule for 6+ months at a time.
  • Communicate effectively with all Foundation team members by utilizing various communication modalities, including Slack, and ensuring vital information is shared promptly and accurately.
  • Advance the Foundation's mission by actively supporting efforts to prevent childhood drowning and fostering a love for swimming through engaging instruction and positive role modeling.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to contribute to the team's success.

Qualifications

Must-Haves:
  • Safety Certifications: Current BLS Certification (Basic Life Support).
  • Experience Working with Children: Minimum 3 years of experience working directly with children in a teaching, coaching, or caregiving role.
  • Effective Communication & Customer Service: Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to provide exceptional customer service and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Time Management & Organization: Exceptional time management skills and the ability to manage schedules effectively.
  • Commitment to Mission: Genuine commitment to drowning prevention, water safety and the mission of the Childhood Drowning Prevention Foundation.
  • Reliability & Accountability: Ability to achieve desired goals for themselves and their students, take responsibility for high-quality customer experience consistency, and deliver exceptional instruction.
  • Detail-Oriented & Follow-Through: Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow through on tasks and instructions without having to be reminded.
  • Problem-Solving & Decision-Making: Ability to evaluate problems, resolve them quickly, and demonstrate sound judgment.
  • Technology Adaptability: Ability to learn and utilize new technologies, such as the Slack communication app.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 45lbs and work in water, sun, and heat for extended periods.
  • Creative Teaching Approach: Ability to use creative teaching methods to engage students.
  • Values Alignment: Demonstrated ability to embody the values of the Foundation.
  • Proactive & Service-Oriented: Track record of "going the extra mile" and demonstrating a "service above self" mentality.

Nice-To-Have:
  • Proven Swim Instruction Experience: 2 years of experience teaching swimming lessons to diverse age groups.
  • Water Safety Proficiency: Comprehensive understanding of the 8 Basic Water Safety Skills and the ability to effectively teach them while being as hands-on as possible for students that need it.
  • Stroke Technique Mastery: Demonstrated knowledge of various swim stroke techniques and drills and the ability to demonstrate and instruct them accurately.
  • Advanced Certifications: Such as Lifeguarding Certification, EMT, etc.
  • Special Needs Experience: Experience working with children with special needs including Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Blindness, etc.
Position Outcomes
  • Don’t have to rely on the Founding CEO or upper management for help – become a MASTER INSTRUCTOR
  • Have a minimum of 10 students pass their Safety Test #2 by their year mark
  • 90% approval rating among clients served w/ a completely booked schedule (give or take a few time slots)

Compensation: $0.17 per hour
